Work From Home Medical Certificate: What You Need to Know
A work from home medical certificate is issued by an NMC-registered MBBS or MD doctor and recommends that you work remotely for a stated period because a medical condition makes daily commuting inadvisable. Crucially, it states that you are fit to work and unfit to commute, which is the opposite of what a sick leave certificate says. Issued under the MoHFW Telemedicine Practice Guidelines 2020, from ₹599, delivered within 30 minutes.

Pregnancy with travel restrictions
Where an obstetrician has specifically advised against commuting.
The doctor decides which document fits your situation. If your symptoms mean you should be resting rather than working, you will be advised toward a sick leave certificate instead.
How Long Can It Cover?
For acute problems such as post-viral weakness or recovery from a minor procedure, one to four weeks is typical. For chronic conditions, a doctor may recommend a longer period with a review at the end of it. The period is a clinical judgement, and extending it requires a fresh consultation rather than an amendment to the original certificate.
Will My Employer Accept It?
Employers accept certificates from registered practitioners. What HR checks is that the certificate carries the doctor's NMC registration number (verifiable at nmc.org.in), your name as it appears in their records, the period, the medical basis, a signature and letterhead.
One thing to be clear about: a certificate does not compel an employer to grant remote work. Working from home is granted under company policy, and the certificate is medical evidence supporting the request.
